Before talking about what we should eat and avoid with cholesterol, lets know a little bit about cholesterol.
What is cholesterol?
In simple words cholesterol is a waxy, fat like substance that is found in cells of the body.
What does it do?
It helps the body to make hormones, and make substances that helps the food to digest.
From where does these cholesterol come?
Cholesterol comes from two sources 1. Our body (especially liver) makes the necessary amount of cholesterol and circulates it through the blood in our body (known as lipoprotein). 2. Cholesterol is also found in our food, especially from animal sources like meat, poultry and full-fat diet.
We all know that there are two types of cholesterol LDL & HDL and having both types of lipopotein in healthy or normal levels is important.
1. LDL (also known as- bad cholesterol)- High LDL level can lead to buildup cholesterol in our arteries (Arteries are the blood vessel that carry blood from our heart to our body)
2. HDL (also known as- good cholesterol)- HDL carries cholesterol from other part of our body to our liver, and our liver removes the excess cholesterol from our body.
What are the causes of high cholesterol?
Cholesterol can rise in our body due to two reasons-
1. Eating a lot of saturated fat, trans fat. example; meats, egg yolks, butter, cheese, deep fried food, and packaged food like, cookies, chips, cakes etc.
2. No exercise.
What is a high blood cholesterol?
In simple words when there are too much of cholesterol in our blood, it is known as high blood cholesterol. This condition has no signs and symptoms, thus it is difficult to know if the levels are high. It is said, higher the level of LDL, greater is the chance of heart disease and higher the level of HDL, lower is the chance of heart disease.
How to know if you have cholesterol?
A blood test is the only way to know the cholesterol levels.
