Mixed dal(lentil) tadka | Spicy tempered mixed lentil curry | Dhaba style tadka recipe


1. Split black gram (kali dal) 1/2 cup
2. Split green gram (moong) 1/2 cup
3. Kidney beans (rajma) 1/2 cup
4. Chickpea (kabuli channa) 2 tbs
5. Split bengal gram (chana dal) 2 tbs
6. White gram (urad dal) 2tbs
7. Red lentil (masoor dal) 2tbs
8. Split pigeon pea (arhar/toor dal) 2 tbs
9. Yellow pea (matar) 2 tbs
10. Split yellow gram (yellow moong) 2 tbs
11. Onion 1 cup (finely chopped)
12. Ginger 1 inch (whole) 2 inch (finely chopped)
13. Garlic 2 (whole) 3 (finely chopped)
14. Tomato 1 large (finely chopped)
15. Green chili 2 (finely chopped)
16. Cumin seed 2 tsp
17. Salt to taste
18. Turmeric 1/2 tbs
19. Coriander powder 2 tbs
20. Red chili powder (kashmiri) 1 tbs
21. Meat powder 1/2 tbs
22. Black pepper powder 1/2 tbs
23. Cooking oil 4 tbs
24. Dry red chili 2 (optional)


1. To make mix lentil tadka, take lentils of your choice. You can take as many as lentils you can but remember to add more amount of black gram (kali dal), white gram (urad) and kidney beans (rajma) to give it a restaurant style touch.
2. Soak the lentils for 8-10 hours or overnight. After the lentils are soaked properly, drain the water wash the lentils and put them into a pressure cooker. Add 3 cups of water, salt to taste and 2 tsp of turmeric powder.
3. To enhance the taste of the lentils add 1 inch whole ginger and 2 cloves garlic in it. Cover the lid of the pressure cooker and boil the lentils on medium to high heat till 2 whistles are done. 
4. When 2 whistles are done turn off the heat and wait till the pressure is released. Meanwhile finely chop one large onion, one tomato, 2 green chilis, 2 inch of ginger and 3 cloves of garlic.

For tadka-
5. Add 4 tbs of cooking oil, add 2 tsp of cumin seeds when seeds splutters add 2 chopped green chilis, saute for couple of seconds, now add chopped ginger, garlic, fry for a minute, now add chopped onions and fry them  till they turn golden brown.
6. When onions are fried add chopped tomatoes and cook nicely, once the tomatoes are cooked add the seasonings starting with salt to taste, 1 tsp of turmeric powder, 2 tbs of coriander powder, 1 tbs of red chili powder (kasmiri-for color) and 1/2 tbs of meat masala.
7. Cook all the seasonings, sprinkle water in between as so many powdered spices can make the masala dry. Once all the masala are done cooking pour the boiled mixed lentils into it. Cook the dal with the spices and let it to boil for a minute. Add 1/2 tbsp of black pepper powder and mix.
8. Now serve hot with naan, chapati or steamed rice and enjoy your mixed lentil tadka. Sprinkle some extra black pepper powder, or add a tbsp of butter for more taste.

Serving suggestion-

Egg tadka-

1. To make egg tadka take 4 whole eggs, break the eggs into a bowl. 
2. Now add salt to taste, red chili powder and black pepper powder.
3. In a pan take 2 tbsp of cooking oil and pour the eggs. Stir to scramble it nicely.
4. Once the eggs are scrambled add cooked and tempered tadka in it and mix them properly.
5. Turn off the heat and serve hot with naan, chapati or steamed rice.
