Yellow pea curry | No onion & garlic pea curry | Matar ki sabji


1. Yellow pea 1 cup
2. Cumin seeds 2 tbs
3. Dry red chili (whole) 2
4. Ginger 3 inch
5. Salt to taste
6. Turmeric powder 4 tsp
7. Cinnamon & cardamon powder 1 tsp
8. Coriander 1/2 tbs
9. Curry powder (no onion, garlic) 1/2 tbs
10. Tomato one (chopped)
11. Cooking oil 2 tbs


1. Take one cup of yellow pea and soak it in water for 5-7 hours. After 7 hours drain the water, add 2 cups of water, salt to taste, 2 tsp of turmeric powder and cook the yellow pea till they are tender.
2. To make the curry take 2 tbs of cumin seeds, 2 whole dry red chili, ginger 3 inch and grind them to fine paste. Don't add much water.
3. Now in a pan take 2 tbs of  cooking oil and add the cumin seed, red chili and ginger paste, saute the masala nicely on medium to low heat. Add 1 chopped tomato and water if needed, take care not to burn the masala, cook for 6-7 minutes till the oil is separated from the masala paste or the raw smell is gone.
4. Now Add salt to taste, 2 tsp of turmeric powder, 1/2 tbs of coriander powder and 1/2 tbs of curry powder (no onion & garlic). Mix all the ingredients, pour 1 cup of water and the cooked yellow pea. Let it to boil.
5. When the curry starts boiling sprinkle 1 tsp of cinnamon and cardamon powder (optional) or you and also put handful of finely chopped coriander leaves. Now let it cooking with the gravy for 4-5 minutes. Adjust the amount of gravy according to choice.
6. Turn off the heat and serve hot with chapatis, steamed rice or dahi vadas.

Serving suggestion
To serve with Dahi vada, take dahi vada in a plate, put 1 bowl of yellow curry on it. Sprinkle 1 pinch of chat powder, 1 pinch of red chili powder, 1 pinch of black salt powder, add sev bhujia, fresh chopped coriander leaves and enjoy.
